Ragan Gennusa (1944–2021) was a Texas artist known for Western, Longhorn, wildlife, and Texas landscape art. Born in Rosebud, Texas, he studied art at the University of Texas and later worked with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. His artwork reflects his connection to Texas landscapes, wildlife, ranch life, conservation, and the American West.

About Ragan Gennusa

Ragan was born in Rosebud, Texas, in 1944, and the following year his family moved to Port Arthur, Texas. Raised by parents who enjoyed fishing, camping, and spending time outdoors, Ragan experienced a variety of Texas landscapes during his childhood, from the Texas Gulf Coast to his grandparents' farm in Rosebud.

He began sketching and drawing at an early age. Before finishing high school, Ragan knew he wanted to become an artist.

Education & Early Career

Ragan attended the University of Texas on a football scholarship, where he studied art and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. After graduating, he worked as an artist for an Austin printing company, choosing to pursue a career in art.

He later joined the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and was promoted to Artistic Director. While there, Ragan created the first Texas conservation stamp for the white-winged dove.

Western, Longhorn & Wildlife Art

Ragan left the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to paint exclusively for art galleries in Austin and Houston. His artwork became collected and known throughout the Southwest.

In 1976, Ragan became a charter member of the Gulf Coast Conservation Association and donated artwork for its initial fundraiser. His involvement with conservation groups strengthened his connection with wildlife and the outdoors.

His commissions later allowed him to travel across the country and develop his interest in early settlers and Native American cultures.

Recognition & Commissions

In 1986, Ragan was honored by the State Legislature's selection of him as the 1986–87 Texas State Artist. His artwork was also selected for the Texas Turkey Stamps in 1993 and 1999.

Several of his paintings are displayed in the University of Texas Alumni Center, and he created paintings for the University of Texas football program.

In 1993, New York Life Insurance Company commissioned Ragan to create a series of paintings commemorating its 150th anniversary. Prints of the paintings were made available to company agents, and four original paintings hang in the company's New York office.

Ragan Gennusa & the Texas Hill Country

Ragan lived in the Texas Hill Country outside Dripping Springs, Texas, in the ranch house he built. He painted primarily on commission from a studio overlooking the Texas Hill Country and maintained a strong connection with the landscape surrounding his home.

Ragan passed away on August 13, 2021, in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 76.
