The historic path from Indian Creek to the Thompson Railhead in the Moab Valley region of southeastern Utah is one of the most legendary, grueling historic cattle drive routes of the American West.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, "cattle barons" like Al Scorup and out-of-state "Texan" cattlemen used this rugged geographic corridor to drive thousands of Texas Longhorn cattle across the unforgiving desert and canyon landscapes.
Cattle were driven from the remote rangelands of the Indian Creek country (south of Moab) through the Moab Valley all the way north to the Thompson Railhead.
Once the herd arrived at the railhead in Thompson Springs, Utah, the cattle were loaded onto railcars on the Rio Grande Western Railway and shipped off to national markets like the Kansas City stockyards.
These massive, multi-day drives across the open range eventually ended in the mid-20th century as the livestock industry shifted from trains to commercial trucking.
